This is an aside and not in response to anything mentioned previously here, but it may be useful for others searching this thread at a later date:

If you are using MS3, MShift can use the speedo signal from MS3 (so the VSS is connected to MS3, not MShift). Some users have reported good results doing this. There is more on this here:

If the circuit you are using is producing a 12v square wave signal, just bring it down to 5volt and bypass the on-board VR conditioner
and connect it directly to the processor pin at the header.

This is what I and many others have done to solve this issue.

In addition to what tobmag says, there is also the DRAC module for converting a VSS signal to a square wave:

Some users have reported that these work well with noisy VSS signals.
