Last I saw life from him was may 31st. I was having a comm issue around that time and was corresponding with other people and then saw that he did a code revision and that was it.

The manual says 17-20...I think... are good for serial ground. I would keep it close to the plug on gpio to avoid noise/ground loop issues

Yes it will work "standalone". I don't remember the details but it does use iss, oss and some engine reference to determine load. It is 0 - 5v ref. Map, tps or maf. An old fashioned firewall mounted map would be easiest if it's a older carburetor engine. 5v in from gpio to map, signal out ...
